Short Story

The alarm was going off BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! Jackson threw his blankets off quickly and rushed to start packing his bags for Seattle, Washington where his friend Tim an owner of a small business said he had a possible job he could give Jackson.  Jackson obviously jumped on the opportunity of making money since he hasn’t had anyway of making money in years.  Since Jackson has had so many issues with finding a job he has basically done almost every little task that could earn him a little money.  He would do almost anything for money.
After Jackson finished packing his stuff he headed out the door to the coffee shop around the corner from where he spends his nights.  When he walked into coffee shop the young lady who typically worked weekend mornings ask him,
“What brings you here so early in the morning?”
“I am headed off to the airport to catch a flight to Seattle.” Jackson responded.
“What could you possibly find in Seattle, Washington that you couldn’t find here in New Orleans?” Ask the young lady.
“An old friend of mine up in Washington says he has started his own business and he was wondering if I still needed some work, so i’ve decided I am going to go up and stay for a week and see how I like it.” Jackson said.
Jackson ordered his usual donut and medium black coffee then called a taxi and headed off the New Orleans airport to catch his 8:15 flight to Denver.  Then on to Seattle after that.  When his taxi arrives Jackson begins to think about how the young lady in the coffee shop pointed out how anything that can happen in Seattle can happen New Orleans.
As he was on his way to the airport he was thinking about how he could stay in New Orleans and continue his job hunt, but then he remember part of the reason he was going to work all the way in Washington was because he wants to help out a friend with a business.  It took a long time to get to the airport due to a crash that happened right outside the airport.  When the taxi driver finally got the car up to the drop off loop at the airport, Jackson gave the driver the money he owed, and quickly walked to the baggage check in the airport.  Jackson looked at his watch and saw 7:00, he sighed in relief knowing that he’d make it to his gate in time.  That is if he meets no trouble on his way to the gate.  Once he made it through baggage check he headed towards his gate.  On his way he bought a bottle of water and sat down for a while on a bench in the airport since its 40 minutes until his flight is boarding.
After sitting for two or three minutes he was about ready to get up and keep walking when a man walking quickly around a corner wearing a black suit and carrying an orange envelope walked up to him looking tired ask him,
“Sir, where are you headed this morning?”
“Seattle” Jackson said.
“Perfect! Can you carry this over on your flight?” Ask the mysterious looking man in the suit.
“What is inside of the envelope? I don’t want to be getting in any trouble.” Jackson stated.
“I can’t tell you that but I will pay you $5,000 and I can assure you its nothing bad because it did make it through baggage check didn’t it?  The man in the suit said.
Jackson thought it was a very convincing offer, $5,000 is a huge amount of money that would really help Jackson since he is becoming low on money after all the years of being jobless.
“You’re right it did make it through the baggage check so it can’t be anything that bad, I will take it”
“Thank you sir, I will text you information on where to deliver the package.” The man said.
The man walked quickly back in the direction he came from and when he was out of sight Jackson continued on to his gate.
Once he got on the plane he realized he could have possibly brought a bomb or some terrible weapon on to the plane so he had an idea.  He decided he would try to break the padlock on the package.  So when he sat down he left the overhead bin open making it so when the plane took off it made the package fall and when it hit the floor it broke the padlock and opened.  After Jackson grabbed the package he looked inside and found a black folder with the emblem of the United States on it.  At that moment Jackson knew he had gotten himself into something he would have preferred not to be involved with.  He looked inside and found a top secret United States document.  He wished he could just throw it off the plane and act like he never saw it.
When he got off the plane in Seattle he got a text, “You’ll meet the man on the roof of 600 First Avenue, Pioneer Square.  He will be there at 9:30 tonight, you better deliver this package or else we will find you.” Jackson never thought twice, he decided that he would go to that address drop off the package and continue on to work for his friend the next morning and go on with life.
He made it to his hotel which happened to be only a few blocks down from the meeting point tonight and he turned on the TV.  Top story was of course about the document he was holding in his hands, the man he met at the airport had gotten caught only thirty minutes after Jackson received the text from him.  Jackson then realized--Buzz! Buzz! He looked over at his phone and saw an unknown number he had received a text from.  He looked at the message and explained how it was the United States government who had texted him and they said their plan was to also attend the passing of the documents and they said that if he cooperated they would let him go free with nothing going on his record.  Jackson felt even more nervous now, is the government just going to trick him?
After pondering that idea in his mind for roughly fifteen minutes he said to himself,” I lose either way, so i’ll just stick to the plan.”  For the next hour he was shivering like a dog shaking water off.  He was terrified that he would be arrested and put in prison forever.
Half an hour until he had to meet the man at the address.  He left his hotel room and began his walk to the destination.  The cold of the January night was pushing him to walk faster so he could get warm.  While on his way there he saw dark grey shiny signs with large green letters and an odd font, that say, “The Old Pioneer Building.”  The building was built back in 1892 and served as an office building for a very long time.
After a walk that seemed to take forever he reached the Square and realized he was supposed to be meeting this man on the roof of The Old Pioneer Building.  He looked down at his watch which read, “9:26 pm ET.”  Jackson rushed into the building and found a staircase leading up to the sixth floor of the building.  He knew the government was already on their way up because he heard noises coming from multiple floors below they were moving slowly making sure the exchange happens before they catch the man.  Jackson was wandering through the halls of the sixth floor looking for a roof access point, when he got a text from an unknown number that said, “if you’re not up here in two minutes, you’re a dead man.”  Jackson frantically wandered the halls looking for a way to the roof when he accidently kicked open the door to an old closet with a hatch at the top and a ladder leaning against the wall.  He quickly got up the later and looked around to find the man, he didn’t see anyone.  Was he in the wrong place? He ask himself.  Then from behind him came a man who grabbed Jackson and told him to give him the package, Jackson did so.  Then the man pulled a gun from his coat pocket and pointed it at Jackson.  Jackson thought to himself, “where are they?”  Then eight men popped out from all sides of them and pointed their guns at the man.  The man dropped his weapon and surrendered.  They told Jackson that he was free to go and they handcuffed the wrongdoer.  Jackson climbed down the ladder and ran down the hallway to the staircase.  It seemed like with every floor he went down he regretted accepting that package in the airport even more.
The next morning Jackson couldn’t stop thinking about what happened but he had a job to do, so he went and helped out his friend.
